1. a) the inside diameter of the barrel of a rifle, shotgun, or pistol. A.45-caliber revolver has a barrel with an inside diameter of 45/100 of an inch. A 155-mm. rifle has a barrel with an inside diameter of 155 millimeters. b) the diameter of a bullet or shell fired from a particular gun. c) the diameter of the bore of a cannon, or other piece of artillery, used as a unit to express its length: »

a 40-caliber 12-inch gun.

d) the internal diameter of a tube or hollow cylinder, such as an artery.
2. Figurative. a) amount of ability or merit: »

We have been able to find men of high caliber to fill the vacancies.
